Andrew Malczewski, Little Worlds
July 21th - August 31th

The Lars Roeder Gallery is proud to host Little Worlds, a large-scale installation created by South Texas-based artist, Andrew Malczewski. The fantasy-driven environment enlists clusters of many small, isolated terrains into a unified whole. The work speaks to the social multiplicity of the modern cultural climate while embracing the diversity of the dynamic whole.

Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember, I have always been immersed in fantasy stories. Some of my fondest memories are of me and my siblings gathering around our mom as she read Patricia C. Wrede’s (b.1953) incredible young adult fantasy book Dealing with Dragons (1990). I grew up very familiar with the Fantasy section at the local library and from there began a long lasting relationship these with excellent stories.

As a visual artist, fantasy has played a large role in shaping my work. I have always thought about it as being fantastic, but have never seen the label of “Fantasy Art” as fitting my visual style. My problem was I was getting hung up on the idea of the fantasy genres style. Works like Frank Frazetta’s (1928-2010) Conan the Barbarian (1966) or Larry Elmore’s (b.1948) classic Dungeons and Dragons (1981-87) work. This kind of illustration was what I always thought fantasy art had to be. Muscular guys with big swords and scantily clad women, old men in cloaks with knobby staffs and fireball spells. This was not at all what I was looking for. It was not until I read On Fairy Tales (1947) by J.R.R. Tolkien that helped to focus the concept of what fantasy is and what it does. In using this concept of fantasy, I found a way that lets me talk about and support the visual work and my intentions without having it be overtly explicit in the presentation. This body of work is my way of investigating the concept of fantasy in my visual work of art. This body of work is titled Little Worlds. It is a fantasy construction, a modular sculpture that utilizes the power of the multiple to be many sculptures that create a fantasy like environment, a microcosm of a second world.

Little Worlds runs from July 21th to August 31th, 2017.
